Gwalior Fort

Gwalior Fort is an ancient hill fort situated in the center of Gwalior city. Spread over an area of 3 sq. km, it is one of the biggest forts in India and among the top places of heritage in Madhya Pradesh. Known as the pearl amongst fortresses in India, the fort was built by a local king, Suraj Sen in the 8th century AD on a solitary rocky hill called Gopachal. Finally, the fort was acquired by Scindias in 1886 and ruled until the independence of India in 1947. The fort was built by Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century and was extended by several successive Maharajas of Orchha State. With a blend of Indian and Mughal architecture, Orchha Fort has winding stairs, hidden passages, and several mural paintings of various avatars of Lord Vishnu. Chanderi Fort

Straddling the borders of Malwa and Bundelkhand, Chanderi Fort is a magnificent fort located in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. Situated on a hillock at a height of 71 m, the fort was built by Kirti Pal, a Pratihara king in the 11th century. The remnants of the Chanderi Fort include the Hawa Mahal and the Nau Khanda Mahal. Mandu is an ancient fort city located in the present-day Mandav area of the Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. Built by Baz Bahadur, this 16th-century structure is famous for its large courtyards encompassed by large halls and high terraces. Mandu was a pleasure resort under the Mughal empire and is a testament to the romance between Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati. With a perimeter of 82 km, the Mandu fort is considered the biggest fort in India. The city of Mandu is adorned with spell-binding Afghan architecture surrounded by baobab trees, native to Africa. Dhar Fort

Dhar Fort is a historical fort situated in the Dhar city of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the top heritage sites near Indore, and among the must-visit places as part of Mandu tour packages. During the time of King Bhojdev (1010-1055), this fort was known as Dhar Giri Lilodyan. Later, the fort was renovated by Ainul Mulk Multani, the general of Alauddin Khalji. Maheshwar Fort, Maheshwar

Situated on the banks of River Narmada, Maheshwar Fort is one of the ancient forts located in Madhya Pradesh. Also called as Ahilya Fort and Holkar Fort, it is one of the best forts in Madhya Pradesh and among the prime places to visit in Maheshwar. Built in 18th century, this fort was then the residence of the queen of Malwa, Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar. With its splendid architecture of the Maratha period, the fort premises enclose with various Chhatris and a seat which the queen used to occupy during her stay in Maheshwar Fort. Also, this ancient monument consists of temples dedicated to several incarnations of lord Shiva. Asigarh Fort, Burhanpur

Asirgarh Fort is one of the popular forts located in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the top places to visit in Madhya Pradesh and among the prime attractions in Burhanpur Tour Packages. Popularly known as the ‘Dakkhan ka Darwaza’, the fort is said to have been built by a Ahir King named Asa Ahir in the early 15th century. Built in the Bundeli style of architecture, the fort is a two-storied structure and the interior is divided into two portions. There are bastions which were used for defense purposes in the fort. A flight of steps leads into the basement of the fort and a step well has been constructed beside it. It is one of the best forts in Madhya Pradesh, and among the prominent places of heritage in India.


Garhkundar Fort, Tikamgarh

Garhkundar Fort is an ancient fort located in the city of Tikamgarh, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the best forts in Madhya Pradesh. Built atop a hill, the fort is about 2000 years old and has five stories in which two are underground and three are above it. Surrounded by majestic hills and forests, the fort is built in such a way that it is clearly visible from around 5 km but as you come near, the fort seems to be away from the sight.
