Two Candidates Each of Sena, NCP & 5 of BJP Win

Two leaders each from the ruling NCP and Shiv Sena and all five candidates of the opposition BJP were elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council on Monday night. NCP leaders Eknath Khadse and Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar, Sena candidates Amshya Padvi and Sachin Ahir were named as winners, along with BJP nominees Ram Shinde, Uma Khapre, Shrikant Bhartiya, Prasad Lad and Pravin Darekar. These nine winners secured the minimum quota of 26 votes each to make it to the Upper House of the state legislature.

Chairman of Legislative Council and NCP candidate Ramraje Nimbalkar, Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Pravin Darekar of the BJP and former BJP minister and now NCP nominee Eknath Khadse managed to bag the required number of first preference votes to secure a win.

Sena nominees Sachin Ahir and Aamshya Padavi also posted victories. “We dedicate today’s victory to Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. I thank all the MLAs who have voted for us,” said Sena candidate Sachin Ahir.

Two Congress nominees, which are part of the ruling MVA, however, failed to secure the minimum quota of the first preference vote.

The final vote tally, however, will be announced when all the rounds of counting are over.

The opposition BJP had fielded five nominees – Darekar, Ram Shinde, Uma Khapre, Shrikant Bharatiya and Prasad Lad – and all of them bagged the minimum quota of votes required to win the poll.

Atul Bhatkhalkar, an MLA of the BJP said, “Darekar secured 29 votes of first preference, while Ram Shinde and Bharatiya secured 30 votes of first preference each. It means, our excess votes of the top three candidates on the list will be transferred to our fifth candidate Prasad Lad.”

“If you count all the votes of first preference to the BJP candidates, we have won 133 votes. It means, we have won more votes than we secured in the Rajya Sabha elections (held on June 10),” he said.

The BJP has 106 MLAs in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, while the remaining votes for its candidates have either come from independent MLAs or those from small parties or from other parties.

Voting for the elections to 10 vacant MLC seats was held between 9 am and 4 pm at the Legislature Complex in south Mumbai. In all, 11 candidates – five of the BJP and two each of the Sena, the NCP and the Congress were in the fray.

The counting of votes began after a two-hour delay at around 7 pm.

Earlier, the returning officer invalidated two votes – one each of the ruling ally NCP and the opposition BJP – after objections were raised by leaders of the respective parties, an official said. The objections and invalidation of votes led to the suspension of the counting process by almost half an hour, he said.

The counting, originally scheduled to start at 5 pm, was delayed by over two hours after Congress raised an objection to the votes cast by BJP MLAs Mukta Tilak and Laxman Jagtap. The ailing opposition legislators had cast their votes with the help of assistants, which was objected to by the Congress, a key constituent of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).

However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) rejected Congress’s objection and gave a go-ahead to count of votes.

Unsure of Fair Probe, Partap Bajwa Says Cops are ‘With Gangsters’

It is a big failure on part of the Punjab Police that no shooter involved in the killing of Sidhu Moose Wala has been arrested even after 20 days and nothing will come out in the case till the investigation is taken over by a central agency as top brass of Punjab Police “is in league with gangsters”, the Leader of Opposition in Punjab, Partap Singh Bajwa, has told News18.

In an interview, Bajwa also said Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann could have attracted ‘abetment to murder’ charges for publicising the pruning down of the security of Moose Wala a day before he was murdered.

“This was despite a specific threat on Moose Wala’s life shared by the Delhi Police with Punjab Police’s anti-gangsters squad some time ago. He had 10 security-men, which were pruned down to four and then two. Parents of Moose Wala are simple people and in grief or Mann would have been in serious trouble,” Bajwa said.

“We are extremely unhappy with the probe progress in the Moose Wala murder case. Nothing will come out of the Punjab Police probe. The top hierarchy of the Punjab Police is in league with these gangsters or these gangsters cannot survive beyond 10 days,” Bajwa said.

He said Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has said they will finish off gangsters. “But where was gangster and alleged mastermind Lawrence Bishnoi lodged and planning murders? From Tihar Jail, which is under the direct control of Kejriwal. This is a big question mark on the efficiency of Kejriwal too,” Bajwa told News18.

The Congress leader said the case should be sent to the CBI or NIA immediately as the Punjab Police is “compromised”. Bajwa said most of the shooters are from outside Punjab — Haryana, Maharashtra and other states. “How will the Punjab Police get hold of them?” he asked.

Bajwa also said there are masterminds who are outside India or in jails in other parts of the country. “Interpol has earmarked one particular agency in every country to extradite people and in India, it is CBI. They have the expertise in this. So how will Punjab Police be able to work out this case?” he asked.

AAP Influence Waning in Punjab, May Lose Sangrur

Punjab is gearing up for the crucial Lok Sabha bypoll in Sangrur next week after CM Bhagwant Mann had vacated his parliamentary seat. “AAP’s influence has almost waned in Punjab and the result of Sangrur will show that. It is very difficult for AAP to retain this seat which they had won earlier by a margin of 4.7 lakh votes… in fact they seem to be on the verge of defeat,” Bajwa, who is overseeing the campaign, said.

Pointing to the Moose Wala murder, Bajwa said a major reason for AAP’s waning influence within just three months was worsening law and order where “no one’s life and property is safe”. He claimed that the government’s authority and influence on the people is completely missing. “People feel they have been taken for a ride,” the Congress leader said.

He also said the capability in the top AAP leadership, specifically Bhagwant Mann, was also missing. “From Sardar Partap Singh Kairon (Punjab CM from 1956-64) to Bhagwant Mann — there is a free fall in the capability of CMs in Punjab. People in Punjab have realised there is a big difference in being a stage comic and a chief minister,” Bajwa told News18.

He said Kejriwal took pride in traveling by a simple car and AAP had criticised former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh for traveling in Land Cruisers. “Since Mann has become CM, he has not stepped off the Land Cruisers. He has retained multiple houses. The state chopper has been used like a ‘tonga’ by the CM. Mann said he will come to common places in villages without security. But he went to Moose Wala’s village to meet his parents with 3,000 policemen,” Bajwa said.

People in Punjab feel a vast difference in what AAP said and what they are doing, the Leader of the Opposition told News18.

Agnipath Gets Backing from Cong’s Manish Tewari; Says ‘Need of Younger Armed Forces a Reality Today’

Known to not always toe the party line on contentious issues, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari has backed the Centre’s newly announced Agnipath recruitment process for the armed forces. Even as youngsters aspiring for a career in the army stage protests in many parts of the country, Tewari said while he understood their concerns, he feels that India “needs a younger armed forces”.

Expressing his view on the issue, which seemed divergent from the position of his party, the Congress MP from Anandpur Sahib said on Twitter, “I do empathise with youth who have concerns over Agnipath recruitment process. Reality is India needs a younger armed force with lighter human footprint savvy on technology, equipped with state of art weaponry. Armed forces of Union shouldn’t be an employment guarantee programme.”

Tewari said there was a need for a younger armed forces as modern-day warfare had become more technologically advanced. The MP said the army must have a “lighter footprint”. According to media reports, he has said the Agnipath scheme was a reform in the “right direction”.

The central government’s announcement has been met with opposition by the Congress, with senior leader Rahul Gandhi saying there is “no stable future” for those who opt for this scheme. He also said this was a sign that the Narendra Modi-led government had no respect for the army.

On Wednesday, he tweeted: “No rank, no pension, no direct recruitment for 2 years, no stable future after four years, no respect shown by the government for the army.”

The Congress has demanded the withdrawal of the Agnipath scheme, even as the government issued a clarification stating that the new model will not only bring in new capabilities to the armed forces but also open up avenues in the private sector.

Other opposition parties, too, chimed in. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav called the move “negligent” and potentially “fatal” for the country’s future.

Protests have erupted in several states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for the second consecutive day. Trains were set on fire, window panes of buses smashed and passersby, including a ruling BJP MLA, pelted with stones in Bihar by defence job aspirants.

Apart from issuing a ‘Myth vs Facts’ document to address the concerns, the Centre issued a series of social media posts saying in the coming years, recruitment of ‘Agniveers’ will be around triple the current recruitment in armed forces and ruled out any change to the regimental system.

“The scheme will bring in new dynamism to the armed forces. It will help the forces bring in new capabilities and take advantage of the technical skills and fresh thinking of the youths… It will allow the youths to serve the nation,” the Press Information Bureau said in a Facebook post.

Referring to the financial package of around Rs 11.71 lakh to be given to each recruit at the end of the four-year tenure from the ‘Seva Nidhi Package’, it said it will provide financial independence to the youths and even help them to venture into entrepreneurship.

The opposition Congress kept up its satyagraha accusing the Narendra Modi-led central government of conspiring to falsely implicate the Gandhi family

After being stationed at the office of Enforcement Directorate for close to 12 hours on the second day of his questioning on Tuesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been summoned once again on Wednesday to depose in connection with the National Herald money-laundering probe. The senior Congress leader was grilled for over 10 hours on the first day on Monday.

The opposition, however, kept up its satyagraha accusing the Narendra Modi-led central government of conspiring to falsely implicate the Gandhi family. The BJP, too, sparred with the grand old party saying it was trying to put pressure on the central probe agency to “protect the Gandhis”.

Earlier in the day, Rahul arrived at the ED headquarters at with sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. His questioning began at 11.30 am and he was continuously quizzed for a session of four hours. He then took a break for about an hour around 3.30 pm and went home, and then returned to the ED office.

Here is all you need to know about the second day of Rahul Gandhi’s questioning by the ED in a money laundering case:

  1. Rahul requests to type out statement
According to sources, Rahul recorded his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and requested that it should be typed out. He signed every single sheet of the statement, following which he took a break for about an hour and returned to the ED office. He reportedly asked the ED to complete the questioning no matter how long it took, but the central agency refused to do so and summoned him for a third day, sources added.
  2. Investigators took multiple breaks?
Agency sources said Rahul recorded his statement and checked its transcript minutely. But, Congress leaders have claimed that the investigators took multiple breaks during the questioning on Monday. The investigating officer in the case continued questioning related to the incorporation of the Young Indian company, the operations of the National Herald newspaper, the loan given by the Congress to AJL and the fund transfer within the news media establishment.
  3. Congress leaders stage dharna
Before going to the ED office in the morning, Rahul joined senior party leaders for a ‘dharna’ at the Congress headquarters. Chief ministers of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Ashok Gehlot and Bhupesh Baghel, Priyanka and party MPs were also present. Hundreds of leaders and supporters were once again detained in central Delhi for trying to hold a protest against the ED action for the second day. The Congress alleged that the ruling dispensation was conspiring to defame the Gandhi family. Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala slammed the ED action as “illegal, unconstitutional, malicious and an exercise by a prime minister burning in the fire of political vendetta”.
  4. Rahul takes a swipe at Centre’s jobs announcement
Amid being questioned by the ED, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the Centre over its announcement of recruitment of 10 lakh people in the next year and a half, saying this was a government of not ‘jumlas’ but ‘maha jumlas’. Gandhi tweeted in Hindi, “Just like eight years ago the youth were deceived with a promise of 2 crore jobs every year, in the same manner it is now the turn of 10 lakh government jobs. This is a government of not ‘jumlas’ (rhetoric) but ‘maha jumlas’.” To this, union minister Anurag Thakur responded by saying Rahul should first provide the ED right answers on serious charges of corruption against him. “I would only say to Rahul ji, you should first provide the right answers to ED on the serious charges of corruption made against you so that you provide information during the two days of your questioning that is carrying on.”
  5. BJP says Congress showing its ‘leaders above the law’
In their continued political sparring, the BJP hit out at the opposition party and said this was all “drama” and a bid to show everyone that Congress “leaders are above the law”. “When lawful action is taking place in a case of corruption, Congress is doing this drama and blocking roads… it shows the party considers its leaders above law,” said BJP’s national spokesperson Sambit Patra.
  6. Congress leaders detained yet again
KC Venugopal, who was allegedly manhandled by police on Monday, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury were among scores of party leaders detained outside the AICC office. Lok Sabha MP Manickam Tagore said he and some other leaders, including PL Punia, were not allowed to enter the Congress office and were detained at the Mandir Marg police station. Among the other leaders detained were Surjewala, Jairam Ramesh, Gaurav Gogoi, Deepender Singh Hooda, Ranjeet Ranjan, Jeby Mather, Imran Pratapgarhi, Youth Congress chief BV Srinivas and NSUI chief Neeraj Kundan. Some of the leaders were even roughed up. On Monday, Congress had alleged that police used force against protesters, which led to senior leader P Chidambaram and Pramod Tiwari suffering hairline fractures.
  7. Heavy security deployed in central Delhi
Just like Monday, central Delhi areas had a heavy security cover on Tuesday as well. All approach roads leading to the ED office were made out of bounds as prohibitory orders were imposed and barricades put up. Police personnel including from the RAF and CRPF were deployed.
