While statistics say that almost all of us are guilty of cancelling social plans (zoom calls at the moment) due to a wayward acne attack, some have it worse than others. For the unluckier ones with deeper acne issues, expert treatment is non-negotiable. However, for the ones who are subject to small, infrequent breakouts due to causes like a poor diet, common pore-clogging habits, too much stress or unruly hormones — the answers lie in your pantry.
Scroll down to know more about the most effective acne spot treatments that you can easily whip up at home. Home remedies FTW!
Apple Cider Vinegar
Why: ACV is rich in organic acids like lactic, citric, malic and acetic acid that help in fighting P. Acnes, the bacteria that causes acne. Additionally, it also helps to soothe inflammation and limits the possibility of acne scars.
How: Mix one part of ACV with three parts of water and dab on the affected areas with a Q-tip.
Honey & Turmeric
Why: While curcumin, the active compound found in turmeric has legendary antibacterial properties, raw honey works on the redness of the area by drawing out excess fluid and soothing inflammation.
How: Mix half a teaspoon of turmeric in one tablespoon of honey. Use a Q-tip to apply the paste to the affected areas and let it stay for 5 minutes, before rinsing off.
Green Tea
Why: Rich in antioxidants, green tea regulates the production of insulin, thereby keeping a check on blood sugar spikes that can cause acne. When applied topically, it’s hero ingredient — EGCG reduces the production of sebum, which curbs the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
How: Dip a cotton ball in a cup of cool green tea and apply directly on the affected spots.
Lemon Juice
Why: A fridge superstar by itself, fresh lemon juice unclogs congested pores, clears dead skin cells and dries out the gunk of an active zit. However, since its highly acidic, we’d advise to dilute it with rosewater.
How: Mix equal quantities of lemon juice and rosewater. Use a dropper or a Q-tip to apply it over the spot. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off.
Aloe Vera
Why: We’re not surprised by the fact that fresh aloe vera gel can effectively restrict the breeding of P. acnes in the first place. To add to this, its antifungal properties accelerate the rate of healing while its astringent properties prevent the accumulation of dirt and sebum.
How: Scoop out the gel from an aloe plant and dab the fresh extract on the affected area. Let it stay overnight and wash it off in the morning.
